No. 04 — Milestones

The first $100k

Charlie Munger told a young employee that the first $100,000 is "a b*tch, but you gotta do it." He was right about both halves. It's the slowest stretch of the entire road to a million — and the one that determines whether you finish.

Why the first $100k is brutally slow

Early on, compounding barely helps you. When your portfolio is $5,000, a great market year adds $350 — lunch money. Your savings do essentially all the work, which means progress feels linear and slow while everyone online seems to be getting rich instantly. This is the phase where most people quit.

Watch how the same $800/month at a 7% return speeds up as the balance grows:

MilestoneTime it takesWho's doing the work
$0 → $100k~7.8 yearsAlmost entirely you
$100k → $200k~5.1 yearsYou, with real help
$200k → $300k~3.7 yearsRoughly a 50/50 split
$900k → $1,000,000~1.4 yearsMostly the market

Every $100k after the first arrives faster than the one before it. The machine you're building during these first years is the machine that later prints the last $500k almost on its own — see $500k to $1 million.

How to compress the timeline

Push the savings number, not the return number

At small balances, chasing higher returns is pointless risk: the difference between 7% and 10% on $20,000 is $600 a year, while a negotiated raise or a side hustle can add $6,000. Until $100k, your savings rate is the whole game.

Automate before you can flinch

Route money to investments on payday, before it reaches your checking account. A 401(k) contribution with an employer match is the fastest legal money you'll ever make — a 50% match is a 50% instant return. Details in budgeting and how to save $100k.

Protect the streak

The two things that reset people to zero are high-interest debt and forced selling in emergencies. Clear the first (get out of debt) and insure against the second with a 3–6 month emergency fund.

What $100k really buys you

At $100k invested, a 7% year adds $7,000 without your participation — your money now out-earns most raises. Psychologically, you've proven the system works, and the remaining trip to $1,000,000 stops being a question of if.
